Who We Are And Why This Matters
My name is Darren Kavinoky and I am the founder of Intervention Partners.
I have also worked as a criminal defense attorney for more than two decades. I first became a criminal defense lawyer because it appeared to be the most interesting and exciting area of law. I stayed because I was a ‘criminal’ myself: thoroughly drug-addicted, and engaging in all kinds of misbehavior as a result. Thankfully, I had a pivotal moment in May, 2000 where all of that changed for me. So when it comes to representing clients, there is zero judgment on my part. It really is a ‘There but for the grace of God go I’ experience.
But it was working as a sober criminal defense attorney that brought me to another pivotal moment, where it was clear that I needed to make a bigger difference in people’s lives.
I was representing someone I had been in rehab with. Sadly, he didn’t remain sober, and came to me to help defend him against charges of DUI and drug possession. I was able to resolve his court case very successfully, and I’ll never forget the high-fives in the hallway of the courthouse in the aftermath of that win.
It was several months later that I was sitting at my desk in my office when the phone rang. It was my client’s father. He was calling to invite me to his son’s funeral. My friend, my client, my fellow sufferer — he had overdosed and died.
It was a difficult thing to process, and while I know I didn’t stick the needle in my friend’s arm, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being an accomplice somehow, that I was good at going to court and being a lawyer, but yet there was still more that I needed to learn to be good at. This is what brought me to being an interventionist. It may sound insane, but I suspect I’m one of the few, if not the only, criminal defense attorney that is actively trying to put himself out of business by stopping the problem at the source, so fewer people need criminal defense attorneys.
From a clinical standpoint, I know that the genesis of much of my clients’ criminal behavior was addiction. But from a human standpoint, every time I help one of my clients find their way to rehab, I think of my friend. If you, or someone you love, gets helped, then he won’t have died in vain.
Darren is a Certified Intervention Professional through the Pennsylvania Certification Board (PCB). He is also a member of The Association of Intervention Specialists, and the Network of Independent Interventionists.
He is also the founder of The Kavinoky Law Firm (1.800.NoCuffs) and is known as an award-winning criminal defense attorney. The American Trial Lawyers Association has named him one of the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers in California” each year since 2007. Los Angeles Magazine has identified Darren as a “SuperLawyer” every year since 2010. Darren received an “AV Preeminent Rating” by Martindale-Hubbell (a peer review ranking that signals the highest level of professional excellence and ethics); a perfect 10.0 Rating by Avvo.com (an independent attorney ranking site), and many other accolades. Darren has also authored or co-authored several legal textbooks for major legal publishers in the field of criminal law.
In addition to being an accomplished trial lawyer, legal analyst, and a compelling keynote speaker, Darren Kavinoky is no stranger to the television cameras. Darren is the co-creator and host of the hit TV show Deadly Sins on Investigation Discovery, and currently stars and consults in the new docudrama series Breaking Point. As a certified interventionist, attorney, legal analyst, and “misbehavior” expert, Darren consults regularly on The Today show, Entertainment Tonight, The View, The Insider, Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, CNN, HLN, Fox News, and countless other TV and radio shows.
But even more important than his professional accomplishments is his compelling inspirational tale:
Once an overweight kid from a dysfunctional family, Darren went on to suffer from his own addictions, which plagued him for many years. To call the endpoint of his downward spiral “rock bottom” is a gross understatement; Darren lost everything. But in May of 2000, after two decades of battling his demons, Darren experienced a pivotal moment in his life and turned things around. Since then, the kid who wore “husky” sized Toughskins has completed seven Ironman triathlons. The bankrupt attorney who swept floors in a furniture store created several multi-million dollar businesses. As an interventionist and as a keynote speaker, Darren is now obsessed with helping people and organizations produce their own pivotal moments that are just as powerful.
Darren’s experiences have given him a unique and refreshing perspective. He has the innate ability to authentically connect with people from all walks of life, from white collar to blue collar to no collar – a talent that has resulted in rave reviews from jurors, TV producers, and live audiences alike.
